38th Royal Thomian Regatta

Royal College rowing crew managed to up-lift the T. Noel Fernando Memorial Trophy, by outclassing their arch rivals, St. Thomas' college at the 38th annual Royal Thomian regatta. In the process the royal crew was able to win the 42nd boat race as well. The event was held at the Colombo Rowing Club on Saturday, 22nd October 2011 from 2.00 pm onwards.

The regatta was a full of excitement and both crews staged very close races but St. Thomas' crew won only one event - junior double scull which carries 4 points. The rest of the races were won by the Reed avenue boys recording a 48-4 victory.

One special incident in the regatta was both junior and senior fours were rowed under lights. Junior four was rowed at about 6.30 and the senior four, which is the boat race - 42nd this time, was started at about 7.00 pm. This was a newly added feature to the sri lankan rowing and which certainly helped both crews to hit new records in timings by providing favorable rowing conditions.  This time regatta was organized by the Royal College.

Regatta format:
Races were rowed down in a 1000 yards course. Regatta is composed of 10 races, out of 2, which carry no points, in fact exhibition races. The remaining 8 races are further categorized as junior(4) and senior(4) races.

The crew was;
Samantha de Silva(B), Dinesh Kasunjith(3), Thilina Buddika(2), Charuka Kavinda(S) and Dasun Madushan(cox)

Along with that Samantha De Silva(B) and Charuka Kavinda(S) won the bronze medal in the Over 19 coxless pairs event too.

The two medals were meant lot to the crew as these oarsmen are just having one year of experience. So it is quite sure that these young talents will achieve new heights in the rowing arena in Sri Lanka as the time goes on. At the same time, another crew of the mora took part in the "open coxless fours" event but managed to cross the finish line at 4th.

Initiating a new chapter in Mora Rowing, the women's crew managed to win a gold medal at this national regatta in the "Over 19" category. As this was the 1st time in mora rowing history, Nuwanthika Rajapakshe(S) and Radhavi Samarakoon (B) were able to race their coxless pair down the 2000m course and emerge 1st at the finish line.

At the same time Nuwanthika Rajapakshe(S), Ashanthi Fernando(3), Udari de Alwis(2), Radhavi Samarakoon (B) and Nithini Thenuwara(Cox) were able to win the silver medal in the "Over 19" coxed fours event, advancing form the bronze they won last year.

Meanwhile Udari de Alwis(S) and Ashanthi Fernando(B) managed to win the bronze medal in the "Over 19" double sculls, which helped the team to secure the 2nd place in the women's over 19 category.

Winning three medals at the nationals is a remarkable achievement of the mora women's team, not only because this is the first time in the history of mora rowing, but also this has been their second year in rowing.

For the 8th time running, the Rowing crew of the University of Moratuwa, organized the famous "Bolgoda regatta" of this year, held on 3rd and 4th of September at Ranmal Holiday Resort, Panadura. This is the Sri Lanka's pioneering - 2000m - multi lane regatta, which has been conducting since 2003.

This year's regatta was in tribute to Dr. Ray Wijeyawardhene, who was him self an oarsman, and supported the moratuwa university crew with building the sport inside the university and as well as outside. He took the initiative to start rowing at "Bolgoda Lake" and was one of the guys who supported and guided the mora crew, to start their 1st ever bolgoda regatta.

This year, there were more that 100 races(approx: 112) rowed in two days and the participation was more than 200. Races were rowed under men's and women's categories with

  • under 13
  • under 15

  • open
6 trophies were awarded for men's and women's categories;
  • School category ( M / W )
  • Intermediate category ( M / W )

Indoor Rowing

For the first time in the history of rowing in Sri Lanka, an Indoor Rowing Competition was held last week, 1st (Saturday) and 2nd (Sunday) of May 2010 at Ranmal Holiday Resort, Panadura.

In European countries, during the off season (usually in the winter), as they can't do boat training in the outdoors, they have invented a machine called Ergo Meter. It is actually a simulator and simulates the rowing activity(complete rowing cycle).

To preserve the competitiveness of athletes, they organize "Indoor Rowing championships" in every year in which athletes have to row in the ergometers.

Nowadays ergometer is considered as a very important device for rowing, In Sri Lanka there are some institution who has these devices. So the Kothelawala Deffence University and the Bolgoda Lake Rowing Club took the initiative in conducting such an Indoor Rowing Championship in Sri Lanka.

As this is a very much new experience to the Rowing community, almost every institutions involved in rowing took part in this inaugural event. The rowing team of Sri Lanka army exposed them selves after a long time in this competition.

The whole competition was conducted based on age categories:

  • 13 years and below
  • 14 – 16 years
  • 17 – 20 years
  • 21 – 25 years
  • 26 – 31 years
  • 32 – 38 years
  • Over 39 years (Masters)
  • Elite Category.

And there was a special event called Bolgoda Endurance Challenge event which was an open.

All these categories pertained for both men and women. Only the under 13 event was rowed for 1000m. all others were 2000m. And for each category there were individual events (each athlete has to row 2000m) and team events (where each team consists of 4 members and each one has to row 500m x 4).

At the end of the day kothelawala diffence university bagged most of the trophies in the age categories over 20 and they were even threatening Sri Lanka Navy and Sri Lanka Air Force. Royal College and St. Thomas College were doing well in school categories while prince of wales college, Moratuwa also got some medals.

In women's categories It was again Kotelawala deffence university got many of the trophies in age categories over 20. Meauseus College, St. Bishop's College and Ladies College were among the winners of the school category events.

As this competition is to be organized annually, we can expect more and more competition in the upcoming years, and also because of the rapid growth of the sport in the country, we can expect more and more institutions will become aware of the sport and will coming in to play in upcoming regattas.

Rowing At Bolgoda Lake!

As an initial step to make popular "ROWING" as a sport among Sri Lanka and to promote rowing even outside of colombo, a rowing club named Bolgoda Lake rowing Club(BLRC) established in the last year, in the premises of Ranmal Holiday Resort- panadura, in colaboration with the University of Moratuwa Rowing Team.
Bolgoda lake, wich is a very beautiful lake, in western province, is very famous among the people who love mother nature of Sri Lanka. It covers both colombo and kaluthara disticts and has calm waters which is ideal for rowing.
Although Rowing is a sprot done since about 1900, it has been not famous in Sri Lanka due to various reasons.
